Coffee with my future self
A sequel
Back in March, I jumped on the viral trend and wrote a poem with the prompt “I met my younger self for coffee.” (If you missed that, you can read it here). Lately, I have been spending a lot of time pondering what the future holds, which has inspired me to write this follow-up poem. I would love to know in the comments what your future self would tell you if you were to meet them for a coffee.
I met my future self for coffee
As I sat down with my black brew, I was surprised to see her sipping herbal tea
“It’s after 3,” she says by way of explanation.
I gaze at her in fascination
noticing her face
laugh lines long, frown furrows faint
“I see you chose to age with grace.”
“I promised you I would.”
“You also promised to get me out.”
Her faded green eyes sparkle at me
“I always keep my promises.”
My bright green eyes narrow at her
She watches as I scan the bustling Osaka café
“My story can’t end here.”
“Your story doesn’t end here.”
Wasting the dregs of my youth
The unknown holding me in fear
Fighting with indecision nail and tooth
“I’m sorry I kept you up worrying so many nights. It was all for naught.” she interrupts my spiral.
Sliding out of the booth with a smile
“I have to catch my flight to the Emerald Isle.”
A familiar sensation of anticipation
“You’re going on vacation?
“I’m going home…
to Galway.”
We did it.
We got away.

Sending all the love, my friend ♥
I still need to have coffee with my future self! This was lovely. I can't wait for your next coffee date!
