Time flies! ⏰🕊️
I have now taken my 40th lap around the sun, my European vacation is almost over, and it’s already time for another book club meeting!
I recently posted an essay under my other publication, Musings & Meanderings, about my current tour of Europe and the joy of missing out when traveling. In case you missed it, you can find it here.
Reading our Hungarian author while in Hungary 🇭🇺
I have really enjoyed being in Budapest while reading a novel that takes place here. It has given me some context—being around Hungarian people, visiting memorials and historical places—so I was able to read the novel with a deeper understanding of certain elements in the story. Because The Door is deeply rooted in Hungarian culture, politics, and history, the setting is integral to its themes of trust, secrecy, power, and human connection.
If you have enjoyed this novel, or are interested in learning more about Szabó and her other works, check out the following links:

· You can respond to as few or as many of the questions as you’d like.
· Please number your responses.
· Be sure to share your responses by Wednesday the 28th so I can include them in the podcast at the end of the month!
1. What did you think of the character of Emerence at first? Did your perception of her change as the story progressed?
2. The title The Door is symbolic in many ways. What do you think the door represents, both literally and figuratively, in the novel?
3. How does the relationship between Magda and Emerence evolve throughout the novel? What does it say about the nature of love and power?
4. Magda’s guilt is a key theme in the book. How do you interpret the ending? Do you think Magda’s actions were justified, or was she wrong to break Emerence’s trust?
5. The novel takes place in Hungary during a time of political tension. How do you think historical and political contexts shape the personal relationships we see in the book? Do you think the relationship between Magda and Emerence could be shaped by politics in any way?
6. Is there something else in the novel that stood out to you that you'd like to mention here?
The following questions can be answered by anyone even if you haven’t read or finished the book:
7. How do you think people can balance the need for emotional closeness with the importance of respecting boundaries? Could there be a betrayal in simply caring too much?
8. How do past experiences—especially painful ones—shape the way people relate to others? Do you think older generations carry emotional burdens differently than younger ones?
9. Why do some people struggle to ask for help, even when they need it? Is pride always a bad thing, or can it be a form of strength?
I’m continuing to ride the birthday train this month, so this poll is made up of books by authors from my favorite countries where I’ve lived: Indonesia, France, and Mexico! Click on country name for book synopsis.
Happy Reading!
